day 1: ninja

“imagine that we’re sitting down one year from now. we’re just hanging out over a cup of coffee. we haven’t seen each other in all that time. what story are you going to tell me about your year?”

a hell of a question, asked by my own coach. i don’t have an immediate answer. but the image alone, the thought of sitting with her and sharing a story over a sunlit table somewhere, creates a smidge of space between my body and the hole i’m stuck in. i feel something give a little.

i know two things: i want to write and i want to coach. these are the things that fulfill me and connect me. to you and to my purpose. it’s not that complicated. but i procrastinate. i am a procrastinator NINJA.

what is in my ninja toolbox? many, many shiny objects. like the wait for divine inspiration. or for the arrival of the right day of the week or meaningful date. or the funny or annoying social media post that i must respond to. or the need for a snack. or the next draining headline. or the string of texts with friends. or my email inbox. or the endless search for the lost pair of reading glasses. or the small corner of imperfection that craves organization.

many, many shiny objects.

but today, they stay in the toolbox. today, i am not a ninja. i’m just the writer and the coach i wish to be. and as i sit here, writing this letter to you, i feel better for it already.

so tell me…

what do you feel you’re meant to do?

what shiny objects keep you from it?

imagine that we’re sitting down one year from now. just hanging out over a cup of coffee. what story are you going to tell me about your year?

  1. To be able to change hats on a moment’s notice. Much like diving into a pool, I still pinch my nose on a daily basis.
Very good point about shiny objects. There are many to be admired for a little while but I too dwell on nonsensical chores as my main procrastination go-to! We can always bid the year farewell with hopes that we don’t dwell too much on the could have, would have should haves. I’d like to try to do more of the “Do’s” and place the “Don’t’s” on hold. Very inspiring words to reflect on.
